David Gold has re-tweeted, and it is now widely accepted that Rangers have received a 7M bid for Croatian striker Jelavic. It is a take it or leave it bid; that is, the Hammers will walk unless it's accepted on face value. And despite previous protestations from Ally McCoist that 6M wasn't nearly enough, at one point Rangers owner Craig Whyte appeared to be leaking news that they would accept it. However, Chief News Reporter for Sky Sports Brian Swanson has just tweeted that Rangers have rejected the bid.
My feeling is that while, from all the accounts I've heard from both Celtic and Rangers fans, the player is worth it, it was also a large percentage of our transfer budget to have tied up in one deal. The player is not a proven commodity in the Championship, let alone the EPL, and I am not too disappointed if this rejection is the case.
Frankly I'm more excited by the potential signing of 24 year old Leeds United winger/striker Robert Snodgrass. There were productive talks yesterday between both clubs, and West Ham are placing an offer in for him today. Snodgrass is a creative player who can play on either wing. His reputation at Leeds is stellar, and, furthermore, he is very experienced in the Championship. Altogether, he is a better bet, for less money.
Another deal I am hoping for is for 23 year old Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis McGugan; Forest are said to be considering the offer.
Both of these young players, I believe, offer far more potential for the club than Jelavic, and both can probably be had for the price of the Jelavic bid.
Finally, reports that West Ham are moving for Salomon Kalou are, at this time, completely wide of the mark.
Fingers crossed, that both Snodgrass and Mcgugan arrive before Monday.
Paul

Anonymous they're two different types of players, as the author alluded too when he called him a winger. So how you can judge him "miles better" baffles me
ReplyDeleteActually he called him a winger/striker
DeleteJelavic is overrated no where near 7 million 17goals and 6 of them panalties,so only 11 goals from open play not good enough, think young snood grass will be a good signing.
ReplyDeleteright enough,if hes not good enough for whu, young rhodes could fit the bill, get him for the same money.still have enough for another scotsman in SNOODGRASS,ex livingston of the 3rd division in scotland, and you say jelavic couldnt make it down south, wakey wakey.
DeleteThat should say snodgrass,lol
ReplyDeleteSnodgrasss and grab Macormick while where @ it
ReplyDeleteGuys you are well shot of him, He is 26 and has scored in all competitions including internationally A grand total of 65 goals! 26 years of age and 65 goals. 37 of them are while he has been playing in the Spl. If there was ever an over valuation of a player it his him.
ReplyDeleteEven the Rangers fans slag him off because he gets lost in games and does not contribute to the team, Just pop's up at the end with a penalty.
Rangers are in a financial crisis right now and there day to day running of the club is a farce, they are holding out for more than 9million for Jelavic because they "apparently" rejected an offer of that amount on the last day of the summer transfer window.
Who ever is stupid enough to spend 9million on jelavic must be mentally unstable or have money to throw away.
Thats right not in class of that great £25 million pound England striker on score sheet every week!!! Whats his name? OH! YEAH ANDY CARROL
DeleteTeehee I think I have offended a wee rangers fan,he's not worth 7 million.lol
ReplyDeleteAnonymousJan 25, 2012 09:37 AM
ReplyDeleteJelavic is miles better than snodgrass you ignorant mug. WATP
---------------------------
Ignore the stupid hun, they're completely different types of player.
Many of Jelavic's goals come from penalties anyway.
hes over rated playing in the spl thats the same as our div 2 17 goals 6 from the spot so thats only 11 in how many games hardly prolific, any way nobles our pen taker stay clear of him
DeleteNot worth 7million 2 or 3 for a layer who has not proved it in any other league apart from the Spl. He has not even proven it at international level.
ReplyDeleteGary hooper is worth more, Just as good a scoring record as him in the Spl, And does a hell of a lot more work than him for the team. And Hooper was firing them in the championship so he has proved it at 2 levels.
Jelavic is a dud
Bwwaaaaahhhhaaaaaa, of course he would hahahahahahaha. This guy has been touted for the last three years, now he has played about 4 half decent matches and he is a world beater again. He will vanish again and pop up in three years again and play four decent matches and continue his pattern - vastly over rated sand dancer.
Deletewhat the hell has henrick larsson got to do with the price of haggis ???
ReplyDeleteCant think of any side in the premier league that would take any scotch league player - full of no marks and mercenary foreigners who wouldnt cut it at a higher level. so a reported £7m for a bloke with an average scoring record in a league with only 2 semi competitive teams doesnt bear thinking about !!
Rangers money men should bite west hams hand off if its true
james forrest for one, he would rip the pish out of any english defenders...FACT
ReplyDeleteI dont know if you have all seen him play but he is technically way ahead of anyone else in Scotland and he is worth more than £7 million and contrary to the Hooper lover above(Celtic fan), his link up play is top quality.
ReplyDeleteHe has not been on good form this season tho mate, He was better last year, He goes missing all game and cannot cut it as a lone striker. Maybe it's because the rest of the rangers team are no marks or has beens..or even worse Sone (pay to play) Aluko. Put him in a team that likes to play attacking football and with a bit of flair then he might be better.
DeleteHe needs to get out of that hell hole farce that is rangers ASAP
How did Snodgrass gain a reputation as a good Championship player? I do believe you said "stellar". Oh that's right he went from Livingston (hardly AC Milan!!) to a poor Leeds side and built a reputation. I have a sneaky feeling you have limited knowledge of football in general, far less Scottish football. A player would have to move, prior to building a reputation.
ReplyDeleteYou're entitled to your opinion, Anon, and while I disagree with it, I'd defend your right to it. I just ask that you use your "superior" knowledge of football in a more constructive and less vitriolic manner (your "sneaky feelings" need to stay firmly in your head, or you're off).
ReplyDeleteAmong Leeds fans, Snodgrass has a reputation for working hard: he is motivated, productive and a creator of goals. Scottish, English: it doesn't matter - he's a good player.
Looking forward to productive banter, not abuse. Paul
Among Rangers fans, Jelavic has a reputation for working hard: he is motivated, productive and a SCORER of goals. Scottish, Croatian: it doesn't matter - he's a good player.
Deletepaul,i think the abuse starts when others are making noises about the spl being mickey mouse etc,if its that bad,why all the bids for our poor quality players?
ReplyDeleteAnon: no doubt there are excellent players in Scotland, certainly many that would excel in the PL. The SPL is a good league; it's only problem is a lack of money and the size of the talent pool: that's no fault of it's own. I hope the money will come; I don't think Celtic and Rangers defecting to the EPL is the answer. In the short term it would doom the SPL to mediocrity; in the long term, many clubs would then want to follow suit (Hearts, Dundee etc) and I think that would be extremly damaging to Scottish 'ball. I enjoy the Championship more than both PL leagues right now: it's more open and any team can win at any venue on any day - something you cant say about the EPL or the SPL.
ReplyDeleteAbout the abuse on the forum: I am working through the comments rooting out
1) off topic debate (Rangers vs Celtic)
2) SPL vs EPL
2) personal attacks
3) inappropriate language
Bear with me.
Cheers Paul.
This is a W Ham site, so could some of you please stop with the childish behaviour, your giving us Scots a bad name. I'm a Gers man and my own honest opinion on Jelavic is that he is a class act, forget those statistics given from the post earlier. Not all players start playing first team football at say 18, and bang in 20 goals a season, mabe on some fans playstation they do, players these days break through mostly in their early twenties, and improve as they get older, prime example Henrik larsson who an ill informed fan used as an example above. Jelavic has been such a player getting better all the time, what others fail to mention is that Jelavic scores, creates, links up play, and is good in the air, oh yes and he's still a young man with years of international football ahead of him. These are the reasons why he's a wanted man, plus he has a guaranteed sell on price. After saying all that, I hope stays for the rest of the season.
ReplyDeleteKind'a expect more childish celtic fans on here trying to pick holes in the facts I've given.
This is why we should not pay 7million for Jelavic..
ReplyDeletehttp://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11096/7453638/Rangers-feel-the-pinch?
This is from today and it's quite obvious that Rangers are on there knees at the moment..if we wait until the last day of the transfer window we could get him for his real price..maybe 2 or 3 million.
lets get real,we buy him for 4 million, sell for 2-3 million, great buisness, shouldnt think so,
DeleteIn 2009–10, playing for rapid vienna he played in 33 games (as first squad in 31 and as substitute in two) and scored 17 goals with 5 yellow cards and 1 red card. In the Europa League, he played six games and scored four goals with one assist. If he was playing for a pl team, he'd be hitting 25-30 a season. How much is that worth?
ReplyDeleteSpot on if Jelavic was playing with good players he'd score plenty as well as setting up others.
DeleteAs for the celtic fans they know that when Jelavic had Lafferty and Naismith with him he was a much better player. The only reason he's struggling is because they're both injured long term and he's had to play upfront on his own (which does not suit him) or with David Healy!
jela is a good player. he pouches the goal and has a spectacular first touch, just look at the over head kick against st johnston last season. its reminisent of the goal rooney had. however this season he has, for some reason, not been up to scratch, his mind isnt on the bal but on whether he will be sold or not. not a good situation for any player to be in, id recommend
ReplyDeleteAll about the poor supply from the supposed Internationals, next to him.
DeleteI could be wrong here, and mabe I should have double checked before posting, but didn't Jelavic score like 11-13 goals in Europa league ? the year before he signed for gers. Anyone know for sure ?.
ReplyDeleteYeah, scored 11, 3 of them against celtic, maybe help understand why they are on here slating him lol hooper aint nowhere near him, at least if jelavic doesnt score you can bet good money he'll be involved in an assist or build up.
Deletesomethings got to give or we will end up with sweet FA
ReplyDeleteWE ARE NOT SELLING HIM BECAUSE HE'S THE BEST STRIKER IN THE SPL AND DONT EVEN TRY AND ARGUE BECAUSE THE STATS PROVE IT. WE DONT SELL HIM JUST FOR THE MONEY BECAUSE WE WILL WIN THE TAX CASE!!!.
ReplyDeleteLee Clayton Daily Mail
ReplyDeleteLee Clayton @LeeClayton_
The story about #Westham and #Jelavic of #Rangers is NOT true, I'm told. No bid. Sam doesn't value him that highly.
Dont listen to the celtic fans on here lads, take it from a guy who watches jelavic play week in week out, the guy would be an ideal signing for west ham to help take you back to the epl.
ReplyDeleteHe is two footed, good in the air and on the deck, can hold the ball up well and has technical ability. A lot of comments here on his goals this season, mainly the pens. He has been off form since his head has been turned by english football, yet still has had a good goals return. He scored plenty last season in the run in, diff types of goals too with two great freekicks. Not many pens if any.
As for his career goals, the guy was pretty much injured for 4 year on and off. he has only really kicked on the last few years, and if he did sign, you went up and he plays at the euros, your gonna have a player ready to met the epl head on next season. You could do a helluva lot worse
lot of people on here stating opinion as fact. Like who the hell is James Forest ??? but apparently he would rip premier league defences apart. er OK.
ReplyDeleteFor the poster who jokingly put up Andy Carroll as a top English striker, well he sure isnt worth the money paid for him but shows the lack of english forward quality in depth as well as when you get past Rooney the bulk of the rest are very second rate.
Sorry but i agree £7M for a bloke who scores a few in a very low standard league and who clearly has no ambition to play at a high level is bad business
He wants to play for liverpool, in europe, and represent his country at euro 2012 but because he might not want to sign for west ham in the championship he shows no ambition??? Ok then, il have what your having lol
DeleteThe dogs in the street know that Rangers are desperate for working capital and Jelavic is their biggest sellable asset, in short they must get money for him, cash only, no player swaps, no add-ons, future instalments- cash NOW!
ReplyDeleteWhy pay £7m now when you could get him for £3m on 31st Jan?- which is probably about his true value.
(£10m = the compliant Scottish media inflated value, risible)
Hi, first of all I am Scotting and a Rangers fan. I see Jelavic regularly and without a doubt he has bags of talent. A great reader of the game, a good work ethic, class finisher and very athletic (see his collection over overhead kicks and scissor kicks on you tube).
ReplyDeleteWould I pay £7-8m for him? If my team was in England then I would, but not in Scotland. We paid £4m and I have to say he was worth that to us (helped us to 3 titles in a row with a very shallow squad). Some of the other players mentioned here are not in the same class. If you have a decent squad, go with Jelavic to improve it, if not sign Snodgrass and McCormack to beef it up. So how is your squad?
There seems to be a lot of people on here who don't quite understand the transfer market. Player might be worth their weight in gold but that doesn't mean you can just buy them for going rate, it's not like buying a fixed price house.
ReplyDeleteIt's knocking on someone's door and offering to buy their home for market value. Now if they are desperate to move, they'd probably snap your hand off, but if they like their home they'll tell you where to go. However, if you offer them "silly money" then you could have a deal.
Rangers don't want to sell a player they not so long ago paid £4.5M for and who is the best in the team. He's a player that an out of form team are relying on to help them a receding chance of winning the league. It would be folly to let him go.
However, they will tempted to part with him for ample compensation.
This is not about paying for how much something is worth, it's about providing acceptable compensation. I'm surprised how few seem to understand that - especially the guy who thinks you'll be able to get him for £3M at the end of January. That's pretty laughable.
